These annoying creatures are found all over the globe, and in 2020 they were even found in Antarctica, on King John Island, where the polar stations of different countries are located. It is believed that tourists brought insects to the end of the world. Many are sure that almost the only way to spend a summer without mosquitoes is to get to the sea coast. Corrosive in a good sense, “Subtleties” found out why the ubiquitous bloodsuckers do not like seaside resorts and whether there are exceptions to this rule. The absence of mosquitoes near the sea coast is associated with the peculiarities of their reproduction: many species, including common mosquito common in Russia, lay eggs only on the surface of fresh water, in stagnant or low-flowing bodies of water, puddles, barrels or other containers with water (for example, old tires). The water should be warm and calm – low temperatures, great depths and waves are detrimental to mosquito offspring, so sea water is not suitable for breeding squeaky biters. Most mosquitoes do not breed in water that has a salinity greater than 30 ppt (30 g of salt per litre), and the average salinity of sea water is 35 ppt.

If there are sources of fresh water near the sea, then most likely you will have to relax in the company of mosquitoes: fresh lakes in the Crimea, estuaries in the Sea of u200bu200bAzov, swampy reservoirs in the vicinity of Anapa, streams and springs in the forests of the Greek peninsula of Halkidiki – a favorable environment for the development of annoying insects .
In addition, the larvae of some mosquitoes feel great in both fresh and salt water. For example, the invasive species Aedes taeniorhynchus and Aedes solicitans lay their eggs in salt marshes and tidal pools along the Atlantic coast of South and North America. And in the hypersaline lakes of the Crimea live the larvae of bell mosquitoesspecies harmless to humans. These unique creatures can survive even in conditions of ultra-high salinity – up to 300 ppt (300 g of salt per liter of water).
