Samoa ready to reopen its borders to foreigners

The State of Samoa is ready to reopen its borders to foreigners

The Samoan government has announced that it will reopen the country to international travelers in August or September. The exact date is expected to be announced at a later date. Former politician and paramount chief, now Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa confirmed that the country will resume the arrival of Samoan citizens and foreign workers from May and intends to allow entry for tourism purposes from August-September, subject to progress in vaccinating the Samoan population and lifting restrictions , including quarantine.

According to officials, the country needs foreign tourists — they will help in the recovery of the island's economy after two years of problems related to the pandemic.

The Samoa Tourism Authority has continued to work in the background with local tour operators and regional representatives in preparation for an influx of travelers in the coming months. For example, it has developed its own version of a digital tracking app, upgraded the skills of field staff, updated guidelines, and expanded COVID-19 testing capabilities.

“As international travel begins to take shape again, Samoa is committed to providing the necessary safety and readiness to travel. All our efforts ensure that we guarantee a safe opening of borders for tourists who want to experience Samoa's unspoiled beauty, unique cultural experience, rich heritage and friendly locals, — emphasizes Acting Director General of the Samoa Tourism Authority Duane Bentley.

Samoa is located in the South Pacific Ocean, occupying the western part of the archipelago of the same name. The nearest neighboring airports are located in New Zealand — less than a four hour flight, and on the east coast of Australia — a little less than six hours.
