The Wind and Rain Bridge usually consists of pillars, towers and pavilions, and the main building material is wood. There are railings and benches on both sides of the bridge.

The peculiarity of these bridges is that nails were never used in their construction. Dong's ingenious carpenters used butt joints in the structural elements of the bridge to hold them together and transfer the load to the pier.

The most famous of these bridges is the Chengyang Bridge in Sanjiang County, Guangxi Province. It was built in 1916 and is one of the finest and largest ancient bridges in China.
